Growing Old on Scilly: the conversation

The council has commissioned Five Square Solutions to develop a set of options for delivering social care and wellbeing services on Scilly for the next 20 years. The focus is on services provided to frail adults and the elderly. As part of this work they are asking Scilly's residents for their thoughts on this important issue. The consultants have provided an introduction to the work they are carrying out, including how you can get involved, below.

Who we are
Five Square Solutions is a management consultancy with over fifty years of combined experience of designing and providing health and social care services.  We have been asked to develop a set of options for the model of social care and wellbeing services on the islands for the next twenty years. The focus is on services provided to frail adults and the elderly.

What we will be doing
We are looking at different options because the current provision is not effective in supporting the needs of the community.  With all projects like this, we understand the importance and significance of hearing the perspective of those people who use these services and their families and carers. We want to hear:

  • what you like about the social care services currently in place;
  • what could be done better now;
  • what you would like to see that currently is not available .

This will help us to ensure that the options we put forward to the council include services that will meet islanders’ needs.

The Council of the Isles of Scilly, like all councils, is working in a challenging financial climate and is required to find savings. Therefore we know that we need to be innovative in the solutions we put forward so that the model is affordable.

We are hosting six public events across the five islands from the 13 to 24 June.  Everyone is welcome and it is important to obtain the views from all age groups – at some point in our lives we are likely to either need care and support or take on a role caring for family or friends who need care and support.

We have already heard from some younger people who would really like to have a role in providing care and support to members of their communities, either as a volunteer or a paid worker.  If this interests you, we would love to hear from you too!

Residents will be receiving questionnaires through the post over the next couple of weeks – please do take the chance to give us your views.  If you would like more than one copy of the questionnaire, please contact us and we can send more copies separately. An electronic version of the questionnaire is available in the attached PDF.

Deadline
Please return completed questionnaires to the Town Hall by 4pm on Friday 29 July 2016.

How can people contact us
If you are residents of the island and are unable to make these events we can be contacted through our Facebook Page ‘The Scilly Conversation’, email naomi.ibbs@fivesquare.org or by writing to The Scilly Conversation, Five Square Solutions, 5 The Square, The Millfields, Plymouth, PL1 3JX.
