Climate Change Action Plan 2021

Climate Change Action Plan 2021

Climate change is the greatest global health threat of the 21st century, but it is also the greatest opportunity.

In April 2019, the Council unanimously adopted a motion to declare a Climate Emergency and set an ambition to achieve net zero carbon by 2030.  Following the Councils declaration, a Climate Emergency Working Group was established and recommended to Full Council on 15 October 2019 that a Climate Change Action Plan be developed.

The first stage of the Climate Change Action Plan development has now taken place. The draft plan recognises what actions the Council, along with our local partners and the community have taken over the last ten years including investment into our critical infrastructure, a move away from fossil fuels, the installation of electric vehicle charging points and how we have been working to protect our marine and terrestrial habitats and species.

The draft plan sets out ten key objectives detailing what we plan to do to combat our carbon emissions over the coming years, focussing specifically on what we can control (through the direct control of sites and services), what we can influence (working with our community and local businesses) and how we will work with our local partners and national stakeholders as we move towards net zero carbon by  2030.

The draft Climate Change Action Plan is available to view here or copies are availbale to view at St Mary's Library.

The Council is now seeking your help in further developing the Action Plan.

The next stage of the plan development is to seek the views of our local community, businesses, visitors, partners and stakeholders to help shape the plan, and to work collectively together to identify what our risks and opportunities are, and more importantly how we can support each other to address them.

The consultation opens for four weeks on Monday 8th November 2021 and runs until Monday 6th December 2021 and we encourage you to take part in this process.
