A series of very special church services took place before packed congregations across the islands on Sunday and Monday to mark the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War.
The Services of Commemoration began on St Mary’s in Old Town Church on Sunday evening. After the service, Smudge Smith read the complete Roll of Honour for the years 1914 -1918. Further services took place on Monday, August 4th, on St Agnes, Bryher, Tresco and St Martin’s.
All the services were led by Chaplain to the Isles, Canon Paul Miller with an address given by the Bishop of Truro, the Right Reverend Tim Thornton.
Chairman of Council Amanda Martin, Chief Executive Theo Leijser and Commander Nick Gibbons RN attended the services. On each island members of the community participated in the readings and contributed local knowledge to make each individual service very poignant and meaningful.
The congregations were representative of all the generations with the youngest attendee a mere 9 months and the eldest 93 years old.
