We're pleased to announce that new dog waste bins are being installed across St Mary's to help residents keep the island clean and safe. The new locations are at Porth Hellick (Pumping Road lay-by), Little Porth, Peninnis Lane and the Garrison (by Trinity Cottages - this will be installed by the end of the week).
Dog faeces is a form of refuse that people find particularly offensive and its presence has a potential negative impact on tourism. It should be a matter of pride to ensure that we can walk our streets and footpaths without fear of stepping in dog faeces.
Dog faeces can also be a health risk. Some dogs carry the eggs of Toxocara, a parasitic roundworm that can be transmitted to humans. Children are at particular risk because of a greater degree of hand to mouth transfer. Thankfully, serious risk to health from infections is relatively rare.
Most dog owners are responsible and always clean up after their dogs; make sure you're doing your bit. If your dog makes a mess, please clean it up immediately and dispose of it in one of the dog waste bins. If no dedicated dog waste bins are available you are also permitted to use other general public waste bins.
We are always looking for ways to help the public to keep our islands clean for the enjoyment of all. If there is another location where you think a dedicated dog waste bin would be helpful, please contact Rebecca Steggles by telephone on (01720) 424000 or by email to rsteggles@scilly.gov.uk
