We are pleased to announce that the council has been awarded a grant of £664,250 to progress the self and custom build housing development in Old Town, St Mary’s.
The grant is from the Self and Custom Build element of the Brownfield Land Release Fund. It is administered by the One Public Estate programme which is a collaboration between the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, the Local Government Association and the Cabinet Office, as part of the government’s Self and Custom Build Action Plan to increase the number of self and custom build homes nationally.
The grant will fund 2 access points to the Old Town site and the infrastructure for the electricity, water and sewerage needed to service the 12 self-build plots. The intention is to reduce initial cost for prospective self-builders, ensuring that the homes are as affordable as possible. Subject to the discharge of planning conditions, the site works are expected to start in 2022 and complete in 2023.
Councillor Tim Dean, Lead Member for Housing and Corporate estate said: “The news that the Council has successfully secured grant funding to get this essential project off the ground is very welcome. The funding will go a long way towards ensuring that building a home on this site remains affordable. I’d like to thank the Housing Delivery Team for successfully securing this funding. Whilst this is very welcome news, we recognise that the need for housing on the islands will not be entirely met by this project and we will continue to find other solutions to support the islands’ housing needs."
