Organising a community event for the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III and Her Majesty The Queen Consort

Following the accession of King Charles III to The Throne in September 2022, both Government and Buckingham Palace have announced details on the ceremonial, celebratory and community events that will take place over the Coronation Weekend between Saturday 6 and Monday 8 May 2023.

We are excited to show our support for His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Queen Consort and our services are busy considering how best to mark the Coronation whilst using our resources in a way which best supports the community as a whole. Keep an eye out for more details on our website, social media channels and posters around town nearer the time.

Community events

We are also keen to encourage everyone to join together in ways of their own choosing by ensuring that anyone considering organising a community event can access the information needed to enable a safe and compliant celebration on the islands. We recommend reading the guidance on our Event and Hiring Open Spaces webpage at an early stage of your planning process to ensure you have time to submit any applications which may be required. If you are unsure, after reading the guidance, whether your plans require an application of any kind, please get in touch with the relevant team, as indicated on that webpage. Wider guidance relating to street parties and how to organise one is available on the gov.uk website, but please note that this guidance acknowledges that local policies may apply - and the Council may require longer lead times or be otherwise restricted for certain applications.

As encouraged by government, and in the spirit of the occasion, the Council will waive all fees for the hiring of open spaces and for road closure applications which relate to the coronation, and do all that we can to help make the weekend a success.

Available funding and further information

Funding of up to £10,000 is available for events and activities through the National Lottery 'Awards for All' programme. National Lottery 'Awards for All' does not have a deadline, but it can take up to 12 weeks from the point of application submission to receiving funding, which means applications for the Coronation weekend should be made before the middle of February. All funding criteria and terms and conditions are available on the National Lottery Community Fund website.

For further information about Council services, please contact our enquiries team on 0300 1234 105 (option 7) who will be able to direct your call as appropriate.

We look forward to celebrating this historic event with you all!
