Storm Goretti has impacted people in different ways across the islands and we're aware that some people may still be lacking some basic facilities or home comforts, or be concerned about how to pay for damage sustained. We have set out some existing sources of community support which those affected by Storm Goretti may find useful.
Charitable Trusts
There are two independent charitable trusts on the islands that may be able to provide some financial assistance. These are:
- Isles of Scilly Charitable Trust (registered charity number 207551), which welcomes applications to provide financial support to address particular cases of hardship, in particular to support the health or wellbeing of people in need on the islands who are aged under 60; and
- Richard Addison Charitable Trust (registered charity number 1014632), which welcomes applications to provide financial support to address particular cases of hardship, in particular to support or improve the welfare of people in need on the islands aged 60 or over.
Further information, including the relevant application forms, can be viewed on the Charitable Trusts page of the Council website
Hardship funding and support
For information about hardship funding available to eligible households on the Isles of Scilly, and other sources of support for anyone who may be concerned about their finances and the impact of those stresses on their wellbeing, please visit the Hardship Support page of of the Council website.
St Mary’s Library
St Mary’s Library has reopened following the storm and is ready to welcome anyone who needs a warm space, hot drinks or access to the internet or printing. Those currently without access to television channels may also wish to consider borrowing some books or audiobooks to keep them entertained until services are up and running again.
Keep an eye on the St Mary’s Facebook page for updates about our community activities.
Adult Social Care community drop-in sessions
Our Adult Social Care team visits St Mary’s Library every Thursday between 11.30am and 1.30pm, in case anyone in the community wishes to meet with them and ask any questions. There’s no need to book – just come along and say hi.
If you have any immediate concerns about a potentially vulnerable member of the community or would prefer to ask the Adult Social Care team a question in a less public setting, please don’t hesitate to call 0300 1234 105 and select the relevant option.
Digital Support drop-in sessions
Learn Scilly offer digital support sessions every Thursday between 10am and 12pm at St Mary’s Library. For £2.50 anyone can get help with accessing online services like shopping, banking, paying bills and completing forms.
If you’re having issues using a computer, tablet or other device, would like some tips on how to make the most of apps or other software, or would simply like to ask a few questions about email, text messaging, video calling or photo storage, you can either drop in and wait for someone to become free to assist you, or make an appointment via our customer services team by emailing enquiries@scilly.gov.uk or calling 0300 1234 105 and selecting the relevant option.
Carers Group – next meeting Thursday 22 January 2026
The next meeting of our Carers Group will take place at The Snug in the Atlantic Hotel between 11am and 12 noon on Thursday 22 January 2026.
Anyone who looks after or supports someone who wouldn’t be able to manage everyday life without their help is welcome to attend this group at any time, but we also encourage anyone who would like to do more to help members of the community who may be made more vulnerable by unexpected events, like the recent storm, to come along and ask our Adult Social Care team any questions they may have.
We know that carers can be reluctant to access the support they need and deserve, so if you know of someone you think may benefit from sharing their experiences with like-minded people, please encourage them to come along. You can even join online if you can’t make it in person – just email asc@scilly.gov.uk or call 01720 424470 in advance of the meeting to get the joining details.
Enquiries team
Please remember that if you are unsure about who to contact about something you need help with, our Enquiries Team is on hand at St Mary’s Library and the Carn Gwaval Wellbeing Centre to signpost and advise. The team can be contacted by emailing enquiries@scilly.gov.uk or by calling 0300 1234 105 and selecting the relevant option.
