The Council is aware of community concerns regarding the provision of inter-island boating services during the winter months, particularly for St Agnes and St Martin's.
As soon as the Council was made aware, in confidence, that some operators were considering withdrawing services over the winter as they were no longer financially viable, it made a request to the Department for Transport for emergency financial support. Whilst the Council is not a Local Transport Authority and therefore receives no funding from government to support any of the transport services which are essential to keep Scilly connected, in this instance it was clear from the outset that some form of financial support needs to be provided in order to ensure services to St Agnes and St Martin’s are maintained year-round.
The Department for Transport responded immediately, requesting further details so that the Council’s request could be considered by senior officials and ministers in the new administration. In recognition of the importance of these services to the communities they serve, the Department for Transport has also been in contact with other departments within government to ensure a sustainable solution is found. The Council is continuing to keep in close contact with the department and is keeping it informed of further developments on the islands including the growing concerns of the communities on St Agnes and St Martin’s.
The Council is grateful to Councillors Legg and White for compiling the further information required by the Department for Transport to assist in making the case within government for these services to receive financial support over the winter.
At the same time, the Council has been engaging with the Duchy of Cornwall and local boating operators to better understand their positions and the challenges they face. These discussions have been constructive and further meetings are scheduled over the coming weeks.
The Council recognises the importance of reliable inter-island transport to residents, businesses and community life. We understand the concerns that have been raised and want to reassure the community that this matter is being treated as a priority.
The Council remains committed to working with the Department for Transport, the Duchy of Cornwall, boating operators and island communities to secure a resolution and help ensure the continued provision of essential inter-island services.
