Council well represented at College and Careers Convention 2026

The Council was well represented at Five Islands Academy’s annual College and Careers Convention on 8 October 2026. Officers from the Human Resources department, Children’s Services, Environment Service and the Isles of Scilly Fire and Rescue Service attended to speak to young people and their families about what the Council can offer in terms of apprenticeships and career progression.

Tina Blackwell, Head of Human Resources, highlighted the benefits of events like this to the Council as well as to young people and the islands as a whole, saying: “Attending the Careers Convention was a valuable opportunity to speak directly with young people about the wide range of careers available within local government. From apprenticeships, work experience and entry-level opportunities to specialist professional roles, there are many ways to build a rewarding career while making a positive difference to the community.”

The Council was in good company at the convention, as we were joined by partner organisations, including the NHS, and a number of mainland schools and colleges, as well as individuals who began their careers at the Council and are now helping others explore the opportunities available to them.

The Council’s Post-16 Transition Support Worker, Lucy Humphries was in attendance, along with colleagues from Children’s Services, in order to welcome young people and their families and answer their questions about moving on from school to post-16 education or training. It was great for Lucy to have an opportunity to catch up with students and plenty of useful information was handed out those in attendance, but please remember questions about this subject can be directed to post-16@scilly.gov.uk at any time and the team will be happy to help.

Cllr Joel Williams, Chairman of Council and Lead Member for Children, said: “I’d like to thank everyone who took the time to share their knowledge and experience with our young people at this year’s Careers Convention, and to congratulate Five Islands Academy on a well-attended and smooth-running event despite the travel disruption the previous day. I’d like to remind everyone that our Council teams are always open to discussing career pathways and ideas for future apprenticeships, so if anyone has something they would like to see offered by the Council, please don’t hesitate to contact us.”
