Please be advised that works on the airport terminal car park are progressing currently and due to the Easterly winds that are forecast for the next 3 nights at least the noise from the high point where the airport is located will be heard particularly in Old Town. We do apologise for this in advance and explain below what is being done and what steps are being taken to reduce noise over the night time period.
The airport car park works are being undertaken at night because this is a public area that cannot be closed during the day. The night shift starts at 6:00 pm (1830) so that the workforce and equipment are assembled on station and ready to go when the last flight departs as some works are airside.
The car park area is being remodelled with 7 bus bays to be built. The existing road levels are being raised up to 1 metre and all bus bays are kerbed. The noisiest activities are the sorting of stone fill with an excavator using a sieving bucket, crushing of stone fill with an excavator using a crushing bucket and the cutting of kerbs with a saw to make that shapes required for the bus bays.
Over the next 2 to 3 nights kerbing and stone filling operations will be taking place but to mitigate noise disturbance the sieving and crushing activities with the excavator will stop at 7:30 pm (1930). After this time the excavator will only be used for loading stone into a tractor and trailer – and also levelling the same in place. These are quieter activities.
Unfortunately it will be necessary to cut kerbs as required but this will be done in an area behind the current boiler house and the proximity of this building should help deaden the noise. Also the concrete mixer used will load away from the placing area so again this should help in reducing the noise.
In the event you identify any other noise which you think could be reduced please make us aware of this by calling the number below.
