On the evening of Thursday, 6 June 2024, organisations and communities across the islands joined hundreds of people across the country in holding beacon lighting ceremonies in commemoration of the 80th Anniversary of the D-Day Landings.
The Council of the Isles of Scilly and the Duchy of Cornwall hosted one such ceremony in front of Hugh House at the Garrison on St. Mary's. Photo's of this event can be viewed below.
The ceremony was very well-attended by members of the public, Councillors, veterans and representatives from a range of organisations, including the emergency services. Speakers included Cllr Robert Francis, Chairman of Council. who read the Proclamation; Nathan Dean, Head of Building at the Duchy of Cornwall; and Rachel Lewin, Deputy Headteacher of Five Islands Academy.
The beacon itself was lit by three Year 9 students from Five Islands Academy, assisted by the Isles of Scilly Fire and Rescue Service, and local choir the Scilly Sirens performed a song to accompany the lighting.
Thank you to everyone who helped us organise the event, and to everyone who came to pay their respects and commemorate the 80th anniversary of the largest naval, air and land operation in history.
