The Council has used £2000 from South West Water’s Neighbourhood Fund to transform the courtyard area of the Carn Gwaval Wellbeing Centre into a welcoming space for all of our service users, and for anyone who would like to do some gardening but doesn’t currently have a suitable space of their own.
The Council has used this money to work with the Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust to buy plants and gardening equipment and to create a shaded area to help provide protection from the sun on hot days.
As part of its Nextdoor Nature and Team Wilder projects, the Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust has commissioned local artist Maxine Cole to design the garden and supported a team of volunteers to help with the transformation. The space will also feature a wildlife mural, painted by Maxine with input from the Sibling Young Carers Group.
Tresco Estate has donated plants from Tresco Abbey Gardens to compliment the community garden’s Mediterranean theme and members of the Isles of Scilly Men’s Shed community group have repaired and upcycled chairs for the seating area.
Cllr Joel Williams, Lead Member for Children said: “I’d like to thank all of the organisations and individuals who have donated funds, resources, time and energy to establishing the community garden. It’s a huge improvement and well worth a look if you are down at the Wellbeing Centre or want to come along to one of the gardening sessions.”
If you would like to help us maintain the community garden, you’re welcome to join the group of volunteers, including representatives from the Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust, who will be meeting on Wednesdays between 10am and 12 noon. If you have any questions about the project, please contact our Early Years Assistant, Tamasin Bridge by emailing tamasin.bridge@scilly.gov.uk or by calling 01720 424483
