What to expect
Representatives from a variety of Council teams will be on hand to discuss both full-time and part-time positions, as well as apprenticeship programmes designed to develop local talent and build essential skills for the future.
You will be able to hear firsthand about the many benefits of working for the Council of the Isles of Scilly, ask questions about roles you may be interested in, and find out which vacancies are either available now or coming up soon in the following departments:
Children’s Services
Within our Integrated Strengthening Families Service, we have a range of roles that directly support children, young people and their families through youth work, family support, social work and working with children on a Special Educational Needs pathway. We will also be recruiting to 3 key leadership roles in the coming weeks, that will ensure our service is the very best it can be.
Adult Social Care and community support
We have some great opportunities across our Adult Social Care services, including an Adult Social Worker role and multiple Care Assistant and Senior Carer positions. We’re also looking for Casual Care Assistants to work within the community. Our care workers are highly valued and offer a warm, supportive, nurturing service to our older and more vulnerable adults, so If you’re a committed, compassionate person who would like to help us support and enrich the lives of vulnerable adults, whether in residential care, or in their own homes, we’d love to meet you.
Environment Service
We’re also planning to recruit more Waste & Recycling and Maintenance & Repair Operatives to help us ensure our islands remain beautiful, clean and safe for everyone to enjoy. We’re interested to speak to people who would like to be part of these teams, either permanently or on a casual basis. We are also recruiting for an Environment Services Assistant to help us maintain the islands' environmental standards.
Opportunities in other services
Information will also be provided on vacancies in other Council departments, including casual vacancies for Lifeguards, Adult Education Tutors and Registrars.
Cllr Robert Francis, Chairman of Council, said “The Council relies on having a diverse workforce with a wide range of skills and experience, so I encourage everyone to come along to our recruitment events and find out what’s on offer. These are impactful roles - caring for people in our residential home and wider community, protecting our most vulnerable children, and ensuring a clean and healthy environment for everyone.
We continue to advertise jobs widely to make sure we get the people best suited to each job, but we are also keen to see whether our current vacancies and forthcoming apprenticeship opportunities could be filled by people who are already living on the islands.
As is the case across the country, the need to rely heavily on agency staffing in our social care services has taken its toll on the Council’s budget in recent years – a problem which is compounded by the travel difficulties we face as a community. Employing people already living on the islands in these vital, customer facing roles is one of the most valuable things we can do as a local authority. This is not only because it has the potential to reduce costs, but because people already living here already know and care about the community they will be serving.
There are lots of opportunities for anyone wishing to start their careers or take a new career path – and for anyone wishing to find a way to stay on the islands long-term – and our teams are ready and waiting to tell you all about them.”
