Help us create a community-led vision for Hugh Street

As you may already be aware, the Council has commissioned the active travel charity Sustrans to help us work closely with the community to create a vision for Hugh Street, St Mary’s.

We’re aware that the high street on St Mary’s is important to many people both on and off the islands, but that it hasn’t always kept pace with changing lifestyles over the years, and that this may be making day-to-day tasks more difficult than they should be.

Before the Council considers making any changes, we need you to share your experience of Hugh Street as residents, businesses and visitors, let us know what you think makes it special, and suggest any improvements you may wish to see to create a vibrant, healthy, and sustainable place for everyone to enjoy in the long term.

It’s your high street, so make sure you get involved and have your say!

How to get involved

There are lots of ways for everyone to get involved, simply visit the Sustrans project page by clicking on the link in the box below for more information about how contact the team directly, answer questions anonymously online and join the discussions in person at our workshops on 6 March 2025.

Improving accessibility

In addition to asking for feedback from the wider community, a panel of local residents has also been appointed to help us bring greater focus to accessibility considerations in Hugh Street. They will be working with us to consider how the high street could be made a more inclusive and welcoming place for everyone. You can find out more about their work at the link above.
