From 1 April 2016 the Council of the Isles of Scilly will be introducing charges for off-island commercial waste for St Agnes, Bryher and St Martin’s to ensure that a fair system for charging for commercial waste is put in place across the islands. The cost of disposing of Scilly’s waste is high due to the islands’ distance from the mainland, a lack of on-island infrastructure to appropriately deal with waste in compliance with the law, and a low population base spread across 5 islands. It is therefore essential that charges are applied to commercial waste to cover the true costs of its disposal.
