Porthcressa Beach Set for Second Spring Clean

The Council is organising another spring clean of the town’s main tourist beach, Porthcressa, for this Sunday 13th April from 11am to 1pm.

Last weekend saw beaches across the islands tidied as part of Scilly’s Big Spring Clean. Around 50 people turned up to help tidy Porthcresa beach, which had been particularly badly affected by the extreme Winter weather.

“We’re very grateful for all the hard work of residents, staff and visitors last weekend to help tidy Porthcressa,” said Craig Dryden, Senior Manager for Infrastructure and Assets. “However due to the sheer volume of sand blown from the beach into the gardens and banks at Porthcressa this Winter, we’re going to be going back this weekend to finish the work.”

The strong storms of the most recent Winter took a particular toll on Porthcressa beach, with large amounts of sand being blown up onto the bank and debris washed up on the shoreline. The spring clean this weekend is aimed at ensuring the islands’ main visitor beach is in top condition for the Easter weekend.

The Council will be providing gloves, bags, shovels and wheelbarrows but please also bring your own equipment also if you can. The clean is from 11am to 1pm at Porthcressa Beach on Sunday 13th April.
