RED ALERT ISSUED FOR WIND FOR ISLES OF SCILLY - 8 JANUARY 2026

The Met Office has issued a RED alert for wind for the Isles of Scilly between 16:00 and 23:00 today (8 January 2026).

Please take a moment to read the warning and advice at the following link in full:

https://weather.metoffice.gov.uk/warnings-and-advice/uk-warnings?#?date=2026-01-08&id=4048e7e1-0152-405a-8ee0-7441f990eda8

Please stay indoors from 3pm this afternoon until the warning has been lifted, if at all possible.

We have asked any Council staff who are able to work from home to do so from 1pm onwards. We are also closing St Mary's Library and the Carn Gwaval Wellbeing Centre at 1pm and cancelling all gym sessions and evening classes to keep the community as safe as possible throughout the storm. We will not be re-opening these services until 9am tomorrow morning, so there will be no unsupervised gym sessions during this time.

Please monitor the websites and social media pages of other island organisations for updates from them and stay away from exposed coastal areas and potential debris. Please also continue to keep an eye on the Met Office website for changes to the forecast.

As usual, please call 999 if there is any perceived danger to life or incident requiring an emergency service.

In the event of an emergency relating to highways, open spaces, flooding, or maintenance and repair please call (do not text) the on-call duty phone on 07747 767965.

Thank you for your cooperation.
