On 29 June 2017, the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) published its report on the investigation of the grounding and evacuation of the domestic passenger vessel Surprise, an accident that occurred on 15 May 2016.
The report contains criticism of the council’s licensing procedures and assessments and includes the following recommendation:
“The Council of the Isles of Scilly has been recommended (2017/127) to review its procedures for the examination of candidates for local boatman’s licences.”
We welcome the findings of the MAIB and will be reviewing our licensing procedures in light of the report to help improve boat safety for the Isles of Scilly.
