Update on St Mary's skate park

[UPDATE 21/11/2025: The high and moderate risk ramps have been removed from the skate park and the safety fencing dismantled, to allow public access to the remaining ramp. The dismantled safety fencing will be removed completely from the site next week.]

We recently announced the closure of the skate park at Carn Gwaval on St Mary’s as a result of significant safety concerns raised by the inspectors, The Play Inspection Company Ltd. This action was taken immediately following the inspection to ensure the safety of users prior to our receipt of the fuller inspection report.

We have now received the full inspection report, which outlines the safety concerns in detail. Two of the ramps have been classified as high and moderate risk due to corrosion of the frame and fixings, as well as deterioration with the timber panels. To ensure the wellbeing of users, these ramps will be removed over the half term period. However, the smaller, middle ramp was identified as low risk and will therefore remain in place and available for use once the removal work has been completed.

These interim measures will allow the skatepark to be reopened earlier, so the space can be available for use while we engage with the community on how it could be improved. Your input will be vital in shaping the next steps of the project to provide a safe, inclusive and sustainable space and we will update you on how you can feed in to this process in due course.

Please do not enter the skate park until the Council has made the space safe and removed the fencing and signage currently in place.

We appreciate your understanding and support as we work to improve this valued community space.
