Introduction to the Service

The Council of the Isles of Scilly is the Highway Authority, and is responsible for the construction, maintanence and regulation of all roads and highway infrastructure maintainable at public expense. 

The Council is responsible for approximately 15 km of road and 7 km of footways on St Mary's. Our highway maps can be downloaded at the bottom of this webpage. As part of the Councils highway network, it manages carriageways (A roads and unclassified U roads), footways, railings, gullies/manholes and silt traps, traffic signs, junction markings, street lights, bollards, slipways, verges and lanscaped areas, drainage and road markings. 

The Council of the Isles of Scilly manages and risk assesses the maintanence of its highways to fulfill its statutory obligations and deliver a safe and servicable highway network. You can view and download the Councils Highway Maintanence Manual at the bottom of this webpage, which details the Council's approach to the management of all highway infrastructure taking into account local circumstances and environment. 

The Council is also responsible for managing the road network to ensure that traffic can move freely along the roads. This includes the development of Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs) which can be used to regulate traffic such as through parking restrictions, and for road closures as part of events. 

The Council is also responsible for the co-ordination of Street Works (works carried out by statutory undertakers including utility companies, licensees under Section 50 of the New Roads and Street Works Act, contractors), Temporary Highway Licences and Community Events.
