The Council of the Isles of Scilly and the Duchy of Cornwall are delighted to announce that a site for an affordable self-build homes scheme has been transferred into Council ownership.
The Council’s acquisition of the site in Old Town on St Mary’s is a key step in enabling the project to proceed. The land, which is adjacent to the Old Town Inn, was previously owned by the Duchy of Cornwall, however, under Council ownership, it is now possible to pursue government funding opportunities open to local authorities.
The intention is to develop the site for 12 self-build homes. These will be serviced plots to meet the demand for this type of housebuilding on the Isles of Scilly. You can read the planning application and associated documents at the following link: https://scilly.gov.uk/planning-application/planning-application-p21002
Councillor Tim Dean, Lead Member for Housing, said: “the acquisition of this land by the Council has enabled us to apply for funding to develop the infrastructure of the site. By transferring ownership, gaining planning permission and arranging funding we have gone a long way to making these plots more affordable for potential homeowners. I’d like to thank the Council’s Housing Delivery team for getting us to this stage, and the Duchy of Cornwall for their cooperation throughout the process. We expect to hear by late summer if our application has been successful.”
Luke Humphries, Deputy Land Steward for the Duchy of Cornwall, said: “supporting our local communities is a key aspect of the Duchy of Cornwall’s work so we are delighted to be able to support the Council of the Isles of Scilly in this endeavour to expand capacity for much needed housebuilding in the area.”
The application process to apply for plots is not yet in place, but you can register your interest in self and custom build opportunities on the islands. For more information visit the following page: https://scilly.gov.uk/planning/customself-build-register
