IMPORTANT UPDATE: Changes to Household Waste and Recycling Services from 31 March 2025

[UPDATE 16/01/2025: A morning time slot has been added to the drop-in session on 4 February 2025]

As announced last year, from 31 March 2025 several changes will be made to the Council's Waste and Recycling Services.

The following changes to waste containerisation and collection will come into operation for all households (and businesses) that receive waste services from the Council. Householders will be receiving letters about these changes in the coming days. Businesses, including self-catering holiday lets, should have already received a letter about the changes to the commercial waste service

Changes to containers

Reusable recycling containers will be provided to replace the single-use plastic sacks currently used on St Mary's, St Martin's, Bryher and St Agnes.

Each household will receive the following 3 new reusable containers:

  • Blue sack for paper and card sack: a blue, weighted, 120L (45cm by 60cm) sack with a fold-up fastenable lid to keep the cardboard dry

  • Red sack for plastic and cans/tins: a red, weighted, 90L (45cm by 45cm) sack for plastic and cans/tins, with a fold-over fastenable lid

  • Black box for glass bottles and jars: a black 55L (55cm by 40cm) box for glass bottles and jars, with drainage holes

These new containers will be delivered throughout March, however we ask that householders start using them from 31 March.

For more information on household waste and recycling, including what you can put in your new recycling containers, please visit the 'household waste and recycling' page of our website.

Changes to collection days on St Mary’s

We will also be making some minor changes to waste and recycling collection days on St Mary’s from 31 March 2025 to make the new service run as efficiently as possible.

No changes have been made to waste and recycling collection times. Householders are still required to present their material for collection at the kerbside by 8.30am on their collection day.

You can view a map of St Mary's and the waste collection rounds as they will be from 31 March 2025 below, along with a table listing the areas of St Mary's and their new waste and recycling collection days. If you require any of this information in a different format, please contact zerowaste@scilly.gov.uk or call 01720 424450.

Householder waste and recycling allowances

At Full Council in October 2024, Councillors approved a new Household Waste Collection Policy which applies on St Mary’s and St Martin’s where kerbside collections take place, and on St Agnes and Bryher where households take their waste and recycling for disposal at Council managed sites.

From 31 March 2025, the allowance for all households will be as follows:

  • 2 black waste sacks per week (provided by residents)
  • one set of recycling containers per week (provided by the Council)

If you have a large household, and you think you may exceed the allowance, please get in touch with the waste team directly using the contact details below.

Removal of bottle banks

Due to the rollout of a kerbside collection of glass bottles and jars, the bottle banks located at the Rechabite boat park, Nowhere car park and Telegraph will be removed from April 2025. We will still be able to accept glass bottles and jars at the Porthmellon Waste Site.

The Salvation Army clothing bank will remain on by the Rechabite Slipway. We will be exploring with our local partners and the community what new recycling options we can incorporate at the bring sites.

Helping you with these changes

To support householders with these changes we will be providing the following opportunities for the community to come and speak to the waste and recycling team in person:

Waste and Recycling Service Changes Drop-in session
