The annual meeting of Council took place on 12 May 2020 and saw new appointments across committees and roles within the Council of the Isles of Scilly. Cllr Robert Francis was elected Chairman of Council and Cllr Fran Grottick was elected to the role of Vice Chairman. A full list of the appointments made during the meeting can be viewed below. You can listen to the meeting here.
Cllr Robert Francis, Chairman of Council, said:
"I am delighted to have been re-elected as Chairman and would like to thank my colleagues for their ongoing support. In the coming year I will continue to pursue a positive future for the Council and our community, in the face of some considerable and unprecedented challenges.
I last provided a statement on the coronavirus response on 21 March 2020 and things have moved on significantly since then. At the time, the country was involved in planning its response to the pandemic, including widespread lockdown measures that have affected us all. Sadly, as you know, there have been tens of thousands of deaths, but the measures put in place have reduced the rate of spread to the extent that restrictions are now being reconsidered.
I would like to thank all those who have been involved in planning and preparation for Scilly. Our officers and those in partner organisations have worked tirelessly to ensure that we are ready to respond when needed. Our businesses and community have also adapted admirably to the situation, offering new services and ways of working that I’m sure will benefit us even after the crisis.
Your Council is acutely aware that there are some messages around the easing of lockdown that can be confusing. We are doing our best to signpost to the current advice and I would like to thank our officers for providing excellent, clear information on the Council website on a daily basis.
As we start to emerge from lockdown, I will be making a weekly statement. Your Councillors are well aware that there are different issues and concerns in our community around the path out of this crisis. There are those who are desperately keen to get our fragile economy moving and those who are extremely concerned about being able to achieve this safely. Some feel torn between the two. We have discussed these issues at our council meetings in April and May and will discuss them in future meetings as necessary.
We will continue to follow the guidance from central government and Public Health England, and apply it appropriately to our local context. We will also continue to engage with all sectors of the community, and will commence a consultative process this week, led by Paul Masters our Chief Executive.
Finally, I would like to thank all of you for your efforts to keep each other safe so far – it is working. Please continue to keep in mind that whilst the rest of the country have already experienced the effects of the pandemic, we on Scilly have not had any confirmed coronavirus cases and have therefore not yet needed to respond. We should all stay prepared to respond if necessary.”
