As part of the Council’s ongoing work to improve road safety on St Mary’s, whilst also encouraging more people to walk and cycle around the island, the Council has commissioned a Highways Condition Survey.
The survey work is due to commence from Saturday, 15 October and throughout the following week (weather permitting). The work will inform the Council’s Highways Asset Management Plan which will set out and prioritise future maintenance and improvement works across St Mary’s in the coming years.
The survey also includes a complete inspection of all footpaths and pavements adjacent to the highway which are managed by the Council to assess their safety and identify areas for improvement, in line with the Council’s Corporate Plan objective to “make it easier for pedestrians to walk around St Mary’s by improving pavements and making them safer and more accessible for all.”
The surveys will be carried out by a specialist contractor, using a Road Assessment Vehicle (RAV), which is similar to the vehicle in the photograph below. If you see the inspection vehicle out and about on St Mary’s, or the inspection team along our highways and footways, please be patient and give them room to work.
