Isles of Scilly Resilient Islands Strategy

In April 2019, the Council unanimously adopted a motion to declare a Climate Emergency and to achieve net zero carbon by 2030.

Following the Council’s declaration of a Climate Emergency, it was recommended that the existing Climate Change Strategy needed reviewing, and a Climate Change Action Plan should be developed which was approved by Full Council in May 2022.

The Climate Adaptation Scilly project started in 2021, with the aim of building sea defences against coastal flooding and erosion, and rainwater harvesting tanks for business. The project included funding to develop the Climate Change Adaptation Action Plan, now known as the Isles of Scilly Resilient Islands Strategy.

During development of the Resilient Islands Strategy, we held consultation meetings with the community on:

We also met with various stakeholder organisations such as The Wildlife Trust, the Duchy of Cornwall and Natural England.

Contributions and feedback from these meetings were included in the draft documents and is reflected in the final draft document.

In July 2023 the draft Isles of Scilly Resilient Islands Strategy was approved at Full Council for public consultation.

The proposed strategy will provide the framework to empower individuals, communities and organisations together or on their own to reduce the risk from the physical impacts of climate change on the islands.

The consultation will be open for 6 weeks beginning September 15th 2023.
